A celebration of photography at Photo London and Peckham24
This is a very busy September with so many interesting events that couldn’t happen last year or took place on-line. What a joy to be able to go out again and soak up the culture, music and art. This weekend is a special celebration of photography.
For the 8th time Photo London returns to London to showcase the best photography from around the world. Various galleries will be presenting well known, more commercial work but also new and up and coming artists. It is a fair for photography collectors but also a true inspirational event for photography lovers. It’s a great opportunity to join workshops and talks with fascinating photographers. Everything takes place in the Somerset House from the early preview on the 8th of Sept until the 12th. The list is huge and we wish this event was simply longer. So here are a few picks out of the 88 exhibiting galleries…
Iranian visual artist based in New York Shirin Neshat has been awarded this year’s Photo London Master of Photography.
Over the past three decades, working across photography, video and cinema, Neshat has dedicated her practice to an understanding of the religious and political forces of power that have shaped Iranian and other Islamic cultures. Her art centres on the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, antiquity and modernity, and bridging the spaces between these subjects.
Land of Dreams, 111 photos of local residents of New Mexico, will be exhibited fully in the UK for the first time.
Rankin, famous British photographer, not only will have his photos exhibited at Photo London by29 Arts in Progress, but his studios in Kentish Town will open its doors to the visitors.
The Photographer’s Gallery from London will be showing a selection of beautiful photographs of Russian Arctic from the series called “Hyperborea” by Russian photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva.
Meanwhile, south of the river, during the same weekend - Peckham24 - a festival of contemporary photography. This (free) event is returning to Copeland Park and Bussey Building for its 5th Edition with a theme of SOLIDARITY which was often the response to various events, protests and demonstrations that took place around the globe during the pandemic.
Poland, for example, has seen hundreds of thousands of women protesting in big cities and small towns against the full ban on abortion proposed by the right wing government. Poles have been also demonstrating against the xenophobia & homophobia since the nationalist party won the election, which has been documented by many Polish photographers. APP - Archive of Public Protests founded by Rafał Milach (Magnum) is a platform where activists and socially engage photographers share their photos from various protests in Poland. Peckham24 will show their collective exhibition.
